Law Enforcement Bureau

The Law Enforcement Bureau of the Sheriff's Office is responsible for the delivery of those services traditionally associated with police operations. It is composed of five Districts/Divisions which are responsible for all patrol, investigation, and other specialized duties.

In 2007, the Bureau was restructured to include the Riverton Precinct and the Civil Division. The "Precincts", previously know as "Districts", were renamed to reflect the addition of property crime investigations to their primary patrol responsibilities. The Investigations Division handles all crimes against persons, narcotics and fugitive investigations. The Special Operations Division is just that, providing specialized service in the form of canyon patrol, search and rescue, SWAT, and major traffic accident investigations.

The Bureau provides service to the unincorporated areas of the county as well as seven municipalities that contract with the Sheriff's Office for their law enforcement. Riverton is now its own precinct. Bluffdale and Herriman are known as the Southwest Precinct and they share in the cost of other investigative and special services.

Over the last few years, the Sheriff's Office has incorporated state-of-the-art record management and communications systems into its operations. The Law Enforcement Bureau is the primary beneficiary of these improvements and continues to take advantage of them. We have greatly enhanced our ability to effectively respond to calls, as well as track and manage a large and diverse case load.

Since 2000 the Law Enforcement Bureau, and the entire Sheriff's Office, has dealt with a major change in county government, a significant state legislative mandate, and a changing service area (via annexations). We continue to fine-tune our operation to meet those challenges that will always present themselves, and focus our efforts on the real needs of the community.

The future brings with it several opportunities. We will exploit new technologies and look at even more progressive management techniques. The Law Enforcement Bureau provides a vital service to the community. And in doing so, we constantly re-evaluate the quality and value of our product. Our efforts focus on more than just maintaining a high level of service but raising the standard as well.
