Safe Pharmaceutical Waste
Expired/Unwanted prescription or over-the-counter medications from households have traditionally been disposed of by flushing them down the toilet. Although this method of disposal limits the risk of accidental ingestion, it can cause problems at the wastewater treatment plants where all of the water from our homes eventually ends up.
Wastewater treatment plants do not test or treat for pharmaceuticals, therefore the drugs go pass through and end up in our waterways. Water samples taken from rivers, streams and other waterways throughout the country show measurable levels of many types of drugs. These drugs are not good for aquatic life and need to be eliminated.
Not compelling enough? Then consider the following…
Pharmaceutical medications are subject to misuse. In addition, an increasing number of youth are experimenting with prescription pain medication in particular. Improper use medications can lead to addition. Addiction can lead to alternative means of obtaining medication to meet their burgeoning needs. This in turn may lead to use of illegal drugs which are less expensive and more readily available.
In light of this information, what should you do with your expired/unwanted medications?
The Sheriff’s Office has joined forces with the Salt Lake Valley Health Department and other organizations to provide collection boxes in several local substations throughout the valley. Bring your medications into the substation. You do not need to remove them from the bottles. You do not need to provide any personal information to use this service. The Sheriff’s Office collects the dropped off pharmaceuticals and takes them to a contracted incinerator where they are burned.
